In 1993–1996 the project of reconstruction, restoration and technical re–equipment of the building of the Kremlin Senate built according to the project of the great Russian architect M. F. Kazakov in 1776–1788 was carried out. After introduction of the presidency institute in Russia, it was decided to use this building as a residence of the President of the Russian Federation. For restoration there remained only facades and two halls (Catherine Hall and Oval Hall) from the building, which had once delighted Catherine the Great. The rest of interiors were actually newly constructed in palatial style, distinctive for the works of M. F. Kazakov.
Due to the reconstruction, representative halls of the second floor were organized according to the enfilade principle. 28 exquisite parquets of fine wood were created during the finishing of these premises. The Ceremonial Office in the Small Hall of the Senate Palace is decorated in the more elegant and festive manner than the other work premises. The ancient–looking interiors are equipped with modern technical devices.
