Design — 2010

Laureate of the International competition on architectural and urban-planning concepts of development and reconstruction of the territory of the Dynamo complex in Moscow.

During its long history the Dynamo Stadium had gone through more than one reconstruction. The building, which had been constructed according to the design of A. Langman and L. Cherikover in 1929, was rebuilt as early as in 1936. The last reconstruction took place in 1977–1979 in the framework of preparation for the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.

At the end of 2009 a new investor — VTB’s management — proposed to conduct an international customized tender. Tandems of western companies and Russian design enterprises were engaged in this tender. The tender was won by the team consisting of Mosproject–2 named after M. V. Posokhin in cooperation with «Designed by Erick Van Egeraat», a Dutch bureau, and «Bollinger+Grohmann» design bureau (Germany).

The design development priorities were clearly set: rapid payback of the center; preservation of all historic objects, including the Petrovsky Park territory and the old stadium perimeter; multifunctional performance both in providing the center with additional functions and in solving the city–wide problem with park–and–ride facilities. The main emphasis in work was set on finding a bold recognizable image of the new building.

The territory allocated for reconstruction is divided into two areas: the multifunctional sports, shopping and recreation area around the stadium and the green public area, including the park and an additional site in place of demolished constructions. The latter was transformed into a part of the park. New training fields and tennis courts are covered with «green roofing», minimizing the visibility of architectural interference into this part of the territory. The underground space under the training fields, as well as under the stadium and the square, separating it from the metro stations, is occupied by parkings and partially — by the shopping and recreation center.

Furthermore, the internal part of the stadium is to be completely changed. One of significant, though non–binding, conditions of the tender has been fulfilled: the football field has been turned and simultaneously left in frames of the old perimeter. The football field has been shifted to the Northern facade, like in other options proposed, leveled up to the altitude of +14.000 and turned for about 30 degrees counterclockwise. The versatile hall, leveled up even higher, is integrated into the space between the southern stands of VTB Arena and the historic facade with the famous portico.

The volumes of two halls are covered with single roofing, both its form and design solution are unusual. It resembles a slowly flowing down drop. It is softly rounded up on the edges, where the roofing is to envelope the projected parts of the stands, thus, forming console overhangs. The roofing itself represents the structure of two steel grids consisting of six–sided cells and rigidly bound to each other.
