The experience of Moscow and other cities demonstrates that it is necessary to have the developed social and cultural component in order to arrange a pedestrian zone. During the development of the concept for the Kuznetsky Most pedestrian the historic and cultural distinctive features of this Moscow district were considered.

The historic development of this district has a unique historic and cultural value. The present look of the main driveways, proposed to be included into the pedestrian zone, was formed in the framework of the fashionable commercial district, which existed in this place in the late XVIII – early XX cent. The transformations of separate areas, performed during the Soviet and post–Soviet periods, were of the local nature (except for Teatralny driveway area) and didn’t violate the integrity of the historic development.

During creation of the Kuznetsky Most pedestrian zone, the following measures were provided for the design:

  • to reconstruct the commercial district Kuznetsky MostPetrovkaSofiyskaya Embankment considering the preservation of its valuable historic development. Currently, there are a few large shopping centers operating in this place: TSUM (Central Universal Department Store) with the former «Muir and Mirrielees» shop and new facilities, «Detsky mir» children’s store, Petrovsky Passage, the store in the former branch of «Muir and Mirrielees» Trading House (19, Kuznetsky Most Street). The commercial function of the former «Passage of K. S. Popov and Dzhamagorovs» is to be recovered (12, Kuznetsky Most Street / 3, Pushechnaya Street). All the above–mentioned shopping centers are to be included in the pedestrian zone;
  • to develop the ways of demonstrating the outstanding architectural monuments and other works of art, located in this area, in the existing urban environment according to their basic functional use. It is recommended to pay attention to the buildings typology in order to maximally recover their historic function (in the commercial district frames), as well as to provide optimal conditions for observing the artistically valuable buildings and constructions;
  • to include internal district passages into the pedestrian zone structure;
  • to use the courtyard space of the range of households, subject to their improvement;
  • to include the architectural and archaeological monuments of the district in the pedestrian zone;
  • to develop a system of viewing points using high viewing platforms;
  • to consider stylistic distinctions of the local historic buildings during the working out of the pedestrian zone finish.
